| Legendary Canadian Guitarist Jeff Healey Passes Away at 41 |
One of Canada's most famous guitar players and a friend of UPI Energy LP has
passed away.
Jeff Healey had been battling cancer since the tender age of 1, when he lost
his eyesight because of a rare form of retinal cancer called retinoblastoma.
He overcame life’s plights though, becoming a critically appreciated rock
and jazz musician.
In 1988, his band released the Grammy-nominated album "See the Light," which
spawned the hit "Angel Eyes." Two years later, Healey won a Juno Award
(Canada’s most prestigious music awards) as Entertainer of the Year.
"What we've lost is a virtuoso musician," said Richard Flohil, Healey's
publicist. "He followed his own passion, which oddly enough was not playing
blues rock music, but playing classic rock jazz.
The Canadian blues and jazz great died in a Toronto hospital Sunday evening
after a lifelong battle with cancer.
The employees and friends of UPI were treated to Jeff's talent during the
2003 Rendezvous celebration. He will be sadly missed. |

| Chatham UPI Energy Gas Bar Recognized as One of Two E85 Retail Locations in Canada |
The Chatham UPI Energy Gas Bar, located at 335 Park Avenue East, is one of only two stations in Canada offering the motoring public environmentally friendlier E85 fuel, gasoline blended with up to 85% ethanol. At a Council Meeting on Monday, January 14, 2008, the Municipality of Chatham-Kent recognized UPI Energy LP ("UPI"), a province-wide retailer of environmentally friendlier energy products, and Greg DeJoseph, the Commissioned Agent of the Park Avenue location, for their efforts and commitment in promoting greener fuels, such as E85. Mayor Randy Hope presented DeJoseph with a Certificate of Recognition commending the Chatham resident for bringing national recognition to the community when the Gas Bar and an interview DeJoseph gave on E85 were featured on the CBC National News in November of 2007.
Mayor Hope referred to UPI as "Stewards of the Environment" and cited that their corporate values stem from their commitment to help preserve the environment for future generations. UPI President and Chief Executive Officer, Robert Sicard commented that the recognition is a testimonial of the hard work and tireless efforts of Greg and his staff as well as the men and women at UPI that worked to bring E85 first to Guelph and then to Chatham. "UPI continuously strives to be an industry leader in the renewable fuels movement with the introduction and promotion of greener products," said Sicard. Not only are the fuels available at the Park Avenue location greener, but the gas bar itself is also an environmentally friendlier design utilizing modern, cost effective, above ground storage and dispensing technology.
The Park Avenue Gas Bar introduced E85 to the Chatham market in June 2007 and continues to offer it as well as a complete line of Ethanol-blended gasolines in various grades, containing 10% corn-based ethanol. Gasoline powered vehicles manufactured since the early 1980's are capable of running on Ethanol blends (E10), containing up to 10% ethanol, and are fully warranted by auto manufacturers. However, Flex Fuel vehicles, which can be identified by a yellow gas cap, can be powered with a gasoline blend of up to 85% ethanol without facing any warranty concerns. Currently, automakers offer consumers a selection of 28 Flex Fuel vehicles. According to a September 2006 Natural Resources Canada study, E85 fuel can achieve a net lifecycle reduction in greenhouse gas emissions ranging from 46% to 64% in comparison to regular gasoline.
Formed in 1991, UPI is a Joint Venture of Suncor Energy Products Inc. and GROWMARK, Inc. As a province-wide marketer of petroleum, propane, lubricants and related energy services to rural Ontario, UPI is renowned for its leadership and innovation in the marketing of environmentally friendlier fuels such as, Ethanol blends, made with Ontario grown corn, and biodiesel, made with soybean oil. It is estimated that since 1992, over 15 million bushels of corn have been used in the production of ethanol for UPI's Ethanol-blended gasolines. With the launch of E85, a blend of up to 85% ethanol and UPI's high quality gasoline, in 2007 to the Chatham and Guelph markets, UPI became the only retailer in Canada offering the fuel to the general public.

| Automakers' Calls to Ottawa Applauded by Fuel Retailer |
Guelph based UPI Energy LP, a province-wide retailer of environmentally friendlier fuels, is pleased to hear that the Canadian auto manufacturers and the Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers' Association ("CVMA") are calling on the Federal Government to facilitate the wider availability of 'greener' fuels for motorists. In a CVMA issued statement, Canada's automakers are responsible for bringing over 70 new and environmentally friendlier options in vehicle technologies to the market in the past two years. With automakers now offering consumers 28 Flex Fuel vehicles capable of running on gasoline blended with up to 85% ethanol (E85), it is more important than ever for the advancement of the renewable fuels movement to provide motorists with greater access to 'greener' gasolines. As Canada's only retailer of E85, UPI applauds the CVMA and the Canadian auto manufacturers for their efforts in promoting 'greener' vehicle alternatives to consumers.
UPI feels the expanded availability of environmentally friendlier fuels, such as E85, will help to increase consumer awareness, further advance the Canadian renewable fuels industry and give consumers the opportunity to fully reap the benefits being provided by Canada's auto manufacturers. "UPI's vision of a 'greener' highway, spanning from one end of the province to the other, would provide consumers with greater access to environmentally friendlier fuels and allow each and everyone of us to do our part to reduce greenhouse gases," comments UPI President and Chief Executive Officer Mr. Robert P. Sicard.
From launching Ethanol-blended gasolines, to its province-wide gas bar network in 1993, well over a decade before any government mandate, UPI knows firsthand the benefits that can be attained by offering consumers environmentally friendlier choices at the gas pumps. UPI's Ethanol-blended gasolines (E10), today a blend of 10% ethanol and 90% unleaded gasoline, reduce harmful carbon monoxide emissions by up to 30% and contain fuel ethanol made from Ontario grown corn, benefiting the agricultural sector and reducing our dependency on crude oil, a non-renewable resource. It is estimated that since 1992, over 15 million bushels of corn have been used in the production of ethanol for UPI's Ethanol-blended gasolines, thus providing Ontarians with significant environmental benefits. "Increasing the quantity of ethanol in our fuels will further help to decrease our dependency on crude oil," says Sicard.
In January 2007, UPI further demonstrated its commitment to the renewable fuels movement with the introduction of E85 at the company's Wellington Road 124 Gas Bar in Guelph. Six months later, the product offering at the company's Park Avenue Gas Bar in Chatham was also expanded to include E85. Currently, E85 is only available to the general public at these two UPI locations. UPI is exploring E85 offerings both to the east and north of Toronto and, remains optimistic that it may become far more feasible with the support of various levels of government. "The advancement and availability of environmentally friendlier fuels have taken great strides and have come a long way since UPI first introduced Ethanol blends well over a decade ago," comments UPI's President and Chief Executive Officer. "We cannot stop looking for greener alternatives and, everyone must do their part as environmental stewards to pave the way for a healthier tomorrow to benefit our children and the lives of their children."
UPI, a Joint Venture of Suncor Energy Products Inc. and GROWMARK, Inc., is a province-wide marketer of petroleum, propane, lubricants and related energy services to rural Ontario. | Central Ontario Energy Alliance Powers Tractor with 100% Biodiesel |
From September 11-13, 2007, thousands of agricultural enthusiasts travelled to Woodstock, Ontario, to enjoy what many refer to as the 'nation's premier agricultural event'. In its 14th year, Canada's Outdoor Farm Show offered visitors the opportunity to see first-hand innovative and technologically advanced agricultural products and services.
For the staff at Central Ontario Energy Alliance ("COEA"), an energy supply joint venture involving UPI Energy LP, Waterloo-Oxford Co-operative Inc. and Norfolk Co-operative Company Limited, the Show was an excellent opportunity to showcase their extensive line of environmentally friendlier fuels, including ethanol-blended gasolines and biodiesel. Visitors had the opportunity to see a working demonstration of a tractor, graciously supplied by a COEA customer, powered by 100% biodiesel, made from soybean oil. "We found that since customers are becoming more and more interested in biodiesel, having a working demonstration at the Show proved to be advantageous as it not only generated enthusiasm but also enabled customers to see an innovative product first-hand," commented Mr. Bob Peden, UPI's Vice President of Operations. The working demonstration, new to COEA's display this year, helped to draw significant interest in UPI's DIESEL3000, biodiesel fuel containing methyl ester made from soybean oil. DIESEL3000 is currently available for delivery through COEA for on the farm use. Typically, COEA customers have ordered DIESEL3000 in one of three blends, 2%, 5% and 10%, but higher blends are available upon approval of the engine manufacturer.
Although awareness of biodiesel has risen tremendously since UPI first introduced it in 2003, COEA staff still continue in their endeavours to better educate consumers about the benefits of biodiesel. Having equipment manufacturers and retailers support the product helps to further advance the cause. In 2001, John Deere announced that it approved the use of soy-based biodiesel in its new diesel-powered equipment, older model tractors and engines. The popularity of UPI's DIESEL3000 has grown significantly over the years and this could not have been be more evident than the mass number of ballots received in the draw for 500 litres of complimentary biodiesel fuel, in a 5% blend. An Ingersoll area resident won the free fuel, compliments of COEA.
Representatives from FS Partners, North Wellington Co-operative and CASE 'N DRUM OIL LP, a subsidiary of UPI, were in attendance along with COEA staff to promote the FS brand of lubricants and environmentally friendlier energy products and services. COEA also took part as the Official Fuel Supplier of this year's Show, as they had done in past years.

| Awarding Innovators For Greener Thinking |
Each year the Ontario Co-operative Association recognizes and honours individuals and/or companies for their outstanding efforts and innovative business practices that not only advance but also benefit the Co-operative movement throughout Ontario. This year, the Ontario Co-operative Association is proud to announce that a team of three individuals, Robert Sicard, Glen Perschbacher and Bob Peden, from UPI Energy LP ("UPI") will be awarded the Co-operative Innovator Spirit Award on October 17, 2007 at a Conference and Gala event taking place at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Burlington, Ontario. The trio will be recognized for innovative thinking, which resulted in bringing Ethanol-blended gasolines to the retail market, with province-wide availability, well over a decade ago.
As the energy supplier of choice to the province's Agricultural Co-operative System, UPI began wholesaling Ethanol blends to the Agricultural Co-ops, which created a market niche and 'opened doors' for others to follow. GROWMARK, Inc. nominated Sicard, Perschbacher and Peden for this prestigious award acknowledging that the men "are co-operative innovators who, not only staked a claim for Agricultural Co-operatives in environmentally friendlier fuel alternatives, but continued to advance the cause." Bernie Daly, GROWMARK's Ontario Regional Manager, says that Sicard, Perschbacher and Peden popularized Ethanol blends when others were skeptical and reluctant to do so. "They helped make Ethanol-blended gasoline mainstream and promote Co-ops as its champion." According to Robert Sicard, President and Chief Executive Officer of UPI Energy LP, the road to success has not always been easy. UPI had to overcome various hurdles, gain consumer awareness and confidence to bring Ethanol-blended gasolines to the gas pumps.
Glen Perschbacher, who started as a Management Trainee at the Drayton Co-op in 1959, is no stranger to the Co-operative System. As the former Vice President of United Co-operatives of Ontario (UCO), Glen was instrumental in the formation of UPI Inc. in 1991, which was created to preserve low-cost petroleum distribution options for Ontario Agricultural Co-operatives. Glen is known as the "father of ethanol" for introducing the environmentally friendlier fuel to the province's Agricultural Co-operative system in 1987. Glen retired in 1996 but currently works as a consultant for UPI Energy LP evaluating new growth opportunities.
Bob Peden started his co-op career, more than 28 years ago, with Federated Co-operatives Ltd. in Western Canada and later joined UCO as a Petroleum Specialist. Now, in addition to his role as Vice President of Operations of UPI Energy LP, he continues to serve as the Chief Research and Development Officer for the company.
Bringing with him 19 years of experience in the oil industry, Robert Sicard took the reigns as UPI's first President and Chief Executive Officer in 1992, one year after its formation. Under Sicard's leadership, UPI has continued to introduce innovative product offerings, such as biodiesel, and related energy services that benefit both UPI and the Agricultural Co-operatives. Now as a 15-year veteran of the Co-operative system, he is credited with being a coach, a mentor and a leader. "The Co-ops are one of UPI's key success factors and have been a tremendous asset in placing UPI amongst the top three petroleum and propane suppliers to rural Ontario," comments Sicard. "By remaining true to our Co-operative roots and by providing, without compromise, the highest quality, environmentally friendlier energy products, UPI is poised for an even greater second decade of business."
Sicard and Peden continue in their endeavours to offer environmentally friendlier energy alternatives with the launch of E85, a blend of up to 85% ethanol and UPI's high quality unleaded gasoline, at two gas bar locations in Ontario. The two men also were involved in helping UPI Energy LP partner with a GROWMARK Member Co-operative in Chatham, AGRIS Co-operative Ltd., to complete a feasibility study and form a business plan for a new Soy Diesel plant.
UPI, a Joint Venture of Suncor Energy Products Inc. and GROWMARK, Inc., is a province-wide marketer of petroleum, propane, lubricants and related energy services to rural Ontario. Today, UPI is well known for its leadership and innovation in the marketing of Ethanol blends, an environmentally friendlier fuel, that uses ethanol made from Ontario grown corn. Motorists may choose a 'greener' alternative by purchasing Ethanol blends at over 60 UPI/FS Gas Bars across Ontario. Farmers may also choose environmentally friendlier fuels, such as biodiesel and Ethanol blends, for use on the farm through UPI's bulk fuel delivery or through their local Agricultural Co-operative.
The team of Robert Sicard of Conestogo, Ontario, Glen Perschbacher of Shanty Bay, Ontario, and Bob Peden of Guelph, Ontario will be presented with the Co-operative Innovator Spirit Award during the 9th annual Co-operative Spirit Recognition Awards banquet and ceremony. The award symbolizes the efforts of those that have contributed to a community through co-operative or credit union initiatives. As the crowning jewel of the Co-operative Conference and Gala, the awards ceremony takes place at the Royal Botanical Gardens, 680 Plains Road West in Burlington, Ontario.
The Co-operative Conference and Gala, now in its 7th year, is a two-day event that brings together co-op sector supporters, champions and friends from across Ontario and beyond for professional development, meetings and networking. The Conference includes tours of Hamilton-area co-ops and more than a dozen workshops and sessions. This October, the Spirit Recognition Award banquet, a tradition in the Ontario Co-operative sector for almost 10 years, will celebrate the successes of 10 of Ontario's most distinguished co-operators, including Robert Sicard, Glen Perschbacher and Bob Peden.
The Ontario Co-operative Association (On Co-op), host of the Co-op Conference and Gala, and the Co-operative Spirit Recognition Awards ceremony, is a resource and common voice for Ontario credit unions and co-operatives in the areas of co-operative development, government relations, membership and communications, and lifelong co-operative learning.

| Energy Retailer Aids Farmers With Bio-Security Measures (2005 article) |
Guelph based, UPI Energy LP has implemented a bio-security policy throughout its province wide network in order to reduce the risk of spreading any biological hazards from farm to farm through the company’s employees and its fleet. In the event of an animal disease outbreak, the company would implement its Emergency Response Plan. To a farmer, livestock is their livelihood and any action that reduces the risk of a potentially harmful virus from entering onto a farm is a win-win situation for everyone. The company’s policy was developed in consultation with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, and the Poultry Industry Council.
Under normal conditions, when there is not a suspected or declared disease outbreak, company personnel will be required to thoroughly wash and disinfect, on a weekly basis, all petroleum and propane delivery units and service vehicles that have visited farms. UPI personnel, throughout Ontario, have been trained on the proper mixing, handling and applying of the disinfectant to UPI’s fleet. The company’s policy will include that no UPI driver will be permitted to enter any barn that is actively used for production or sheltering of livestock. Other measures, when warranted, include parking a vehicle on a farm in an appropriate area away from sources of contamination and determining if the farm owner/operator has a bio-security procedure that should be followed.
In the event of an outbreak, UPI would dispatch its Clean Team Unit which is fully equipped with a custom designed cleaning trailer complete with a hot water pressure washer, a dedicated disinfecting system, 500 gallons of water storage and protective equipment for personnel. During an alert condition, when the risk of a potential virus is suspected, the Clean Team Unit would take charge of cleaning and disinfecting UPI vehicles, prior to entering each farm property within the declared area. UPI’s Clean Team Unit, a part of its Emergency Response Team, is fully mobile and able to respond province wide 24 hours a day.
As an added precaution, every vehicle within UPI’s fleet that may come into contact with a farm will be equipped with a bio-security kit in the event that an employee finds himself/herself in an affected zone. The kit contains a variety of protective items, including gloves and a respiratory mask, as well as sanitizer, disposable boot covers and headwear.
“Being mindful of the situations that farmers face in today’s day and age further demonstrates UPI’s commitment to Ontario agriculture. Not only do we understand the dilemma a farmer could face with the risk of an outbreak, we at UPI are willing to take great measures to reduce that risk and take every precaution that we are able to in order to protect the farmer’s animals and his/her livelihood,” comments UPI Energy LP President and Chief Executive Officer Mr. Robert P. Sicard. “At UPI, we believe it is innovative thinking like this that continues to set us apart from the competition.”
UPI Energy LP, a Joint Venture of Suncor Energy Products Inc. and GROWMARK, Inc., is a province wide marketer of petroleum, propane, lubricants and related energy services to rural Ontario. In a continuing effort to incorporate ‘greener’ alternatives into its daily operations, Chatham-Kent Health Alliance (“CKHA”) has implemented an environmentally friendlier initiative involving its emergency fuel supply. On February 13, 2006, UPI Energy LP (“UPI”) began supplying CKHA with biodiesel in a 2 percent blend, an environmentally friendlier diesel fuel made from soybean oil, delivered out of UPI’s Thamesville Office. On that date, UPI delivered 10,869.2 litres of its DIESEL3000™ product to CKHA’s Chatham facility located at 80 Grand Avenue West. On April 27, CKHA and UPI will celebrate a greener initiative at a ‘Go Green with Biodiesel’ event, taking place at CKHA’s Chatham facility. Various media representatives and area dignitaries will join CKHA and UPI staff to celebrate the event.
UPI’s DIESEL3000™ (biodiesel fuel) will be used by CKHA to power electrical generators and boilers in the event of an emergency situation or loss of hydro. Initially, UPI will deliver biodiesel to CKHA’s Chatham campus and hopes to also supply DIESEL3000™ to CKHA’s Wallaceburg campus following an evaluation of this pilot phase. Over the course of a year, CKHA expects that its Chatham campus will use one full tank (25,000 litres) of UPI’s biodiesel, which will ensure that the product in the on-site fuel storage tank is of the utmost quality. In accordance with Ministry of Health mandates, CKHA will conduct weekly tests running equipment on biodiesel.
This initiative means that CKHA will be the first health care provider in Southwestern Ontario to use biodiesel supplied by UPI. “When UPI introduced biodiesel to the farm market in the summer of 2003, we felt that our initiative would help pave the way for the development of biodiesel manufacturing in Ontario, create consumer demand and demonstrate the technical and commercial viability of the renewable fuel. As a strong supporter of the biofuels industry, we believe that today’s initiative will help to further expand consumer and commercial support for the growing biodiesel movement,” comments Mr. Robert P. Sicard, President and Chief Executive Officer of UPI Energy LP.
Biodiesel is a blend of conventional diesel fuel and a renewable source, such as soybeans. UPI introduced DIESEL3000™ to its extensive line of environmentally friendlier fuels in August 2003 and by doing so became the first in Ontario to offer biodiesel to the farm market. UPI’s biodiesel is a blend of methyl ester, produced from soybean oil, and UPI’s high quality conventional diesel fuel. The benefit of using methyl ester is the fact that it is produced from a renewable source (soybeans) and is biodegradable.
UPI’s DIESEL3000™ offers numerous environmental benefits such as the reduction of emissions of several harmful pollutants, including particulate matter, hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and black smoke. In addition, UPI’s biodiesel helps to reduce the emissions of sulphur and sulphur oxides, which are major contributors to acid rain. Furthermore, biodiesel is a renewable fuel and it helps to reduce the overall emissions.
UPI Energy LP, a Joint Venture of Suncor Energy Products Inc. and GROWMARK, Inc., is a province wide marketer of petroleum, propane, lubricants and related energy services to rural Ontario. UPI is well known for its leadership and innovation in the marketing of environmentally friendlier energy products that benefit rural customers in Ontario, such as Ethanol Blends that use a blend of 90.2% conventional gasoline and 9.8% ethanol made from Ontario grown corn.
